I've been in the Colorado Springs area since 1993 and I have not been up to Pikes Peak. Well, that was until today, 29 September 2001.
We arrived at the Cog Railway station at 8:30 am. Since the train didn't leave until 9:20, I decided to take a few shots.
We pulled out of the station and began our climb. Along the way we saw some of the old water tanks that were used to fill the old steam engines once used. Also a tree thought to be 2500 years old. Then came the end of the tree line and now we were near the top.
Just a little bit more to go, we could now see the back side of the peak. A lot of rocks.
We arrived at the summit about 1 hour and 20 minutes after leaving the station. The remains of the first summit house, built in 1873, greeted us. Wow... what a view. Pikes Peak is 14,110 feet above sea level. Hey, I can see my house from here.... I think.....
Looking toward Woodland Park to the north-west.
America the beautiful
